Choosing the right materials
Concrete sleeper walls are the most common choice around Geelong and hold up well against the clay-heavy soil found in a lot of the older suburbs.
They suit most residential budgets and work for anything from a low garden edge to a full structural wall. Besser block gives a cleaner, more finished look and is a good option for taller walls or feature areas close to a house.
Timber costs less upfront, but breaks down faster once it's sitting in wet clay for years, so we generally recommend it only for low, decorative walls rather than anything load-bearing.
Stone costs more again, but it's the right call for older or heritage-style properties where the finish needs to match the house.

Walls over one metre generally need council approval in Victoria, and anything holding back a significant slope needs proper engineering regardless of height. We handle that assessment as part of the process.
How the job runs
Every wall starts with a site visit to check the soil, the slope, and what's actually driving the problem, whether that's drainage, erosion, or just an unusable drop in the yard.
Clay movement is common on the sloped blocks around Waurn Ponds, Ceres and parts of Highton, and it's usually the reason fences lean or garden beds slump downhill over a few seasons, so we build with that in mind from the start.
From there we excavate and remove the soil, which is a job in itself on tighter blocks (see our excavation work in Geelong if that's the bigger part of your project).
Drainage goes in behind the wall before any building starts, since this is the step that decides whether the wall lasts ten years or thirty. Once the wall is built and backfilled, the area is ready for whatever comes next, whether that's a lawn, garden beds, or synthetic grass if you're after something low maintenance.
